ARLINGTON, Va.- NAFCU's Operation: Helping Hand has raised nearly $30,000 for the four nonprofit armed services relief agencies to aid personnel in Iraq and their families. In about six weeks, NAFCU's program has sold over 1.3 million brochures to credit unions for them to put out in their branches for members or to mail out with regular statements. The brochures explain how to donate funds to the relief agencies representing each branch of the armed forces. All contributions to the relief funds are disbursed to military troops and their families. NAFCU will be donating all the net proceeds raised by Operation: Helping Hand divided evenly among the four relief agencies. Prices start at $0.12 per brochure for non-NAFCU members and $0.09 for members and drop according to quantity. NAFCU Vice President of Communications Jay Morris said that approximately 450,000 troops are deployed around the world, and military personnel, particularly the reservists who were called up to fight in the Iraqi war, may need financial aid. Many reservists take a pay cut when they are called up, he emphasized.
