STOCKTON, Mo. – Bank ATMs and vaults were among the only structures standing in this Missouri town in the wake of recent tornados. Every building in the town's square but the courthouse, including two bank branches, had been severely damaged by the storm, the media reported, but standing among the broken walls and piled debris were the ATMs and the little rooms that housed them, along with the banks' vaults. "It was reduced to a pile of rubble with this four-sided concrete vault in the middle," a bank branch manager told the media. Tornados tore through several Midwestern states over the past weekend, ending what meteorologists have called the worst week for severe weather in the nation's history of keeping weather records.
