LOS ANGELES – A new report by the California Public Interest Research Group finds that identity theft is just as frustrating for law enforcement officers working the cases. The report, Policing Privacy: Law Enforcement's Response to Identity Theft, interviewed police and postal inspectors in the largest cities in California and the Federal Trade Commission's top identity theft cities around the country about their experiences attempting to solve identity theft cases. While 68% of surveyed police and inspectors named mail theft as a top concern, officials are also concerned about unscrupulous employees who deal with sensitive information about colleagues or their customers, a lost or stolen wallet, and Internet fraud. The study offers the following solutions to decrease identity theft: * Require credit lenders to improve security checks to ensure credit applicants are not identity thieves; * Facilitate multi-jurisdiction cooperation to investigate thieves with victims all over the country; * Require improved lender cooperation with law enforcement investigations.
