ALEXANDRIA, Va.-Former CUNA lobbyist Maura Hampton has been named NCUA Vice Chair JoAnn Johnson's new executive assistant, Johnson recently announced. Johnson's current top aide, Julie Starnes announced last month that she was moving back to her hometown in Iowa to be closer to family. "I am pleased to welcome Maura to NCUA, as she will provide valued counsel on credit union issues and play a great role in furthering NCUA's agenda," Johnson said. "Maura has a wealth of experience in the credit union industry which will benefit America's credit unions and NCUA as we move forward." Hampton has more than 10 years of experience in the credit union and financial services industry, most recently serving as CUNA's legislative affairs manager. Prior to joining CUNA in 1997, she was a senior legislative advisor on banking issues for House Banking Committee Member Frank D. Lucas (R-Okla.), where she played a key role in congressional relief efforts for the Oklahoma City bombing victims. She helped draft legislation to provide coverage for the surviving bombing victims in the McVeigh-Nichols trial. However, Hampton's work on the Hill began in 1993 working for Congressman Alex McMillan (R-N.C.) as a human resources specialist. "This presents a wonderful opportunity and I am honored to serve Vice Chair Johnson in this capacity," Hampton said. "I look forward to working with the great staff at NCUA and those in the credit union industry." Hampton earned a bachelor's degree in international studies from Virginia Tech in 1991.
