ARLINGTON, Va.-In the spirit of patriotism, NAFCU has initiated a new program to help raise money for the U.S. military troops and their families during the Iraqi war effort. NAFCU-which has many military-associated members-has created brochures available for the next few months encouraging donations to the four non-profit armed services relief agencies, which are available for credit unions to purchase and use either to give away at their branch locations or to include with regular statements. One-hundred percent of the donations to the relief funds go toward relief. Some 224,000 brochures were handed out in the first week. Under `Operation: Helping Hand,' NAFCU will be donating all the net proceeds divided evenly among the four relief agencies. Prices start at $0.12 per brochure for non-NAFCU members and $0.09 for members and drop according to quantity. NAFCU Vice President of Communications Jay Morris said the trade association does not have a goal for how much is raised through the program, but that NAFCU has already received positive feedback from credit unions. He pointed out that approximately 450,000 troops are deployed around the world and military personnel, particularly the reservists who have recently been called up to fight the Iraqi war, may need financial aid. Morris emphasized that many reservists receive a cut in pay when they are called up.
