Corporate America Family Credit Union, Elgin, Ill., has donated $5,000 to Habitat for Humanity. The funds raised will be applied to purchase land for future homes in Elgin. In addition, CAFCU employees have donated their time, sweat and muscle to various Habitat for Humanity home building projects in the area. Fort Bliss Federal Credit Union, El Paso, has donated $100,000 to Fort Bliss Morale, Welfare and Recreation for a Community Life Project. The funds for the donation were derived from the "Save Utility Deposit System" program sponsored by FBFCU. The SUDS program was designed to save hundreds of dollars in utility deposits for junior enlisted soldiers with families living off post, and still guarantee the utility companies payment in case any soldier defaulted. During the 10 years that the program was actively in place, 8,522 soldiers were served. Interest from the account went to "base enhancements," including $41,500 in scholarships for spouses of junior enlisted soldiers. St. Mary's Bank, Manchester, N.H., has donated $10,000 to New Hampshire Catholic Charities to help them reach out to the local community. NHCC provides food for the hungry, counseling, parenting classes support groups, temporary or permanent homes for children and the elderly. Diamond Credit Union, Pottstown, Pa., has donated $7,091.40 to the United Way. For the second consecutive year employees achieved 100% participation. Earthmover Credit Union, Aurora, Ill., has raised over $1,000 for the children of Tina Syzmanski. Syzmanski, a single mother died unexpectedly from a ruptured aneurysm and the children are now being raised by their grandparents. Throughout the year ECU raises money to help support local families in need. Pasadena Schools Federal Credit Union, Calif., in collaboration with Curious Collectors of Bakers Street have donated 62 copies of Sherlock Holmes books to PUSD schools. Each school receives two Sherlock Holmes books for their library; an illustrated version for the elementary schools, and the novel version for the middle schools and high schools. The book donation was initiated to introduce Sherlock Holmes and the writing of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to PUSD students. Brockton Credit Union, Mass., has donated $5,000 to the Brockton Visiting Nurse Association. The money will be used by the organization to provide free home health care services to patients within the area who do not have necessary insurance to pay for these services. Last year the association made over 146,000 visits to needy locals providing nursing, rehabilitation, medical social work and home heath services. The Golden 1 Credit Union, Sacramento, Calif., has raised $42,400 to benefit the Children's Miracle Network. Funds donated will be distributed to several CMN hospitals throughout California to purchase state-of-the-art medical equipment and expand research initiatives.
