BOSTON – For their work in providing capital for small business startups and nonprofits and to create environmentally friendly products and services in their communities, two credit unions were recognized by the Social Investment Forum and Co-op America’s in their annual top 10 list of socially responsible institutions. Self-Help Credit Union in Durham, N.C. and Permaculture Credit Union in Santa Fe, N.M. were highlighted for their “community development work which involves primarily focusing on lending and a growing focus on `green investing’ in the communities they serve,” said Todd Larsen of the Social Investment Forum, a national nonprofit membership association dedicated to promoting the concept, practice and growth of socially responsible investing. Co-op America is a national nonprofit organization that provides economic strategies and organizing power resources for businesses and individuals. Self-Help’s Director of Communications Malcolm White said the recognition goes directly to the credit union’s depositors who have done their part to aid in starting business, revitalizing economically depressed areas and preserving the environment. The social responsible ranking also recognized the following: Chittenden Bank (Brattleboro, Vt.); Coastal Enterprises, Inc. (Wiscasset, Maine); Rudolf Steiner Foundation (San Francisco, Calif.); ShoreBank Pacific (Ilwaco, Wash.); Sustainable Jobs Fund (Durham, N.C.); Underdog Ventures, LLC (New York, NY); Vermont Community Loan Fund (Montpelier, Vt.) and Wainwright Bank & Trust Company (Boston, Mass).
