BOSTON – Credit unions can now provide members with yet another weapon in their identity theft protection arsenal. The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston has created the "Identity Theft" booklet, which describes the dangers posed by identity thieves, what people can do to protect themselves, and what they should do if they discover their identities have been stolen. Available free of charge, the booklet also provides useful contact information for the national credit bureaus and related federal agencies. To order the booklet, consumers can call (800) 409-1333 or visit www.bos.frb.org/consumer/identity/index.htm. The Federal Bureau of Investigation estimates that as many as 700,000 Americans are victimized by identity theft every year.
