PLEASANTON, Calif. – SafeAmerica FCU began doing business as a state-chartered credit union on Dec. 18. The CU's new name is SafeAmerica CU. The $249-million credit union's application to convert to a state charter was approved by the California Department of Financial Institutions in October. SafeAmerica CU was chartered in 1953 as Safeway FCU.
