SALT LAKE CITY – Citing what it calls "unusual support from our members," Mountain America Credit Union said this week the reaction among its members has been "outrage" over the latest bank-led barrage against the CU tax exempt status in Utah. "I think we've received nearly 20 phone calls or e-mails from our members telling us they are simply furious with what the banks are doing," said Fred Nydegger, senior vice president of government affairs for Mountain America. "We don't get that kind of response unless we ask for it." Mountain America, along with America First Credit Union of Riverdale, have been targeted specifically in a media blitz by the Utah Bankers Association and the fledgling, bank-run "Resolution Alliance for Strong Banks and Credit Unions" for allegedly operating illegally as unregulated banks. The banking lobby, said Nydegger, "is trying the old tactic of divide and conquer" but will not succeed. He added that, "We are in lock step with the League in what they are doing."
