ARLINGTON, VA – The average credit card purchase is for more than double the average debit card purchase, according to cardweb.com. Based on data through the end of September, U.S. consumers made an average purchase of nearly $82.00 on their credit card while the average debit card purchase runs about $38.00, the site reported. Over the past 12 months, the average credit card purchase transaction has increased while the average debit card purchase transaction has declined. The site pointed to data it has compiled which indicates that the average purchase on a Visa credit card has moved from $81.08 to $81.94, while the average purchase on a Visa debit card has slid from $38.36 to $37.83. Cardweb cited the data as an indication of the continuing separation of American card users activity into two trends, credit cards for larger purchases and things like travel, where there are often reward points to be had, and debit cards to the smaller closer to home purchases like gasoline and groceries.
