LATHAM, N.Y. – Credit unions from throughout the Empire State took the International Credit Union Day message to the media in a unique way on Oct. 17. In New York City, CU staff and volunteers showed up early wearing credit union brand t-shirts and brandishing an International Credit Union Day banner, to get a prime spot next to the barricades outside the NBC studios for the airing of the network's "Today Show." In addition, a behind-the-scenes effort placed NBC weatherman Al Roker and a box of Credit Union Day chocolate bars on camera in front of the CU folks saying, "This is national Credit Union Day, and NBC Credit Union is here." Meanwhile, across the state, hundreds of candy bars imprinted with the CU brand logo and wrapped in CU facts and logos, were distributed to news media outlets. In Syracuse, the candy bars were delivered to radio stations, and representatives from Syracuse-area CUs were able to talk to radio personalities at five or six local stations. The scene was repeated by credit unions in other cities across the state on International Credit Union Day.
