WASHINGTON-Senate Banking Committee Chairman Paul Sarbanes (D-Md.) has scheduled a hearing for September 19, after deadline, on financial privacy and consumer protection. The hearing aims to examine the public’s level of concern about financial privacy, the adequacy of current federal laws protecting personal nonpublic information, and whether improvements are necessary or appropriate for consumers’ protection. Those scheduled to testify include Minnesota Attorney General Mike Hatch; Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell; State Representative Jim Kasper (N.D.); Phyllis Schlafly of the Eagle Forum; US Public Interest Research Group Consumer Program Director Ed Mierzwinski; Indiana University School of Law Professor Fred H. Cate; and Attorney John Dugan, representing the Financial Services Coordinating Council.
