EUGENE, Ore. – The Commissioners of Lane County, Oregon, approved more than $780,000 in development grants to area initiatives, including $50,000 to O.U.R. Federal Credit Union in Eugene. The $4.5 million, 3,700 member institution received the grant to assist its financial education efforts targeted at low-income or Latino area residents, according to the Eugene Register Guard. The grant will allow the credit union to offer savings accounts, refinance predatory loans and offer help for members starting up small businesses. The county judges grant requests on the basis of the institution's readiness to proceed with the project, its budget and accounting and whether the project will have a sufficient impact on the area's economy or work force. The commissioners hope the development programs will help the county recruit companies and businesses to the area, the article said.
