ALEXANDRIA, Va.-NCUA Board Member Deborah Matz has hired Nancy Smith of the Department of Agriculture to be her executive assistant. Smith is an attorney by trade, but served as Deputy Director of the National Appeals Division at the department, where Matz formerly worked. Smith’s appointment was approved within a week, and she is scheduled to begin work July 15. Matz described Smith’s first few weeks as “a baptism by fire.” On the 16th the pair will travel to meet with California Credit Union League officials and then to meet with NCUA Region VI officials. Following that, it’s on to Seattle for NAFCU’s Annual Conference. Matz said she has known Smith for about 30 years and was one of the first people she met in Washington, D.C. She added that her new executive assistant is a quick study and is already learning the ropes from current acting executive assistant Mike McKenna. She is also a credit union member.
