ALEXANDRIA, Va.-Last October NAFCU met with NCUA Executive Director Len Skiles and Director of Strategic Planning "Tab" Patrick and wrote a letter to Chairman Dennis Dollar encouraging the agency to update its strategic plan to be more inline with the new chairman's philosophy. Seven months later the trade association is pleased with the results of their consultation with the regulator. A side-by-side comparison of the 2003-2008 Strategic Plan released by NCUA recently and the 2000-2005 plan offers subtle, yet potentially significant differences. While not leaving the underserved out in the cold, the new plan's `mission' places emphasis more with "recognizing and encouraging credit union's historical emphasis on extension of financial services to those of modest means," rather than "particularly those of modest means." The more recent plan also possesses a tone of creating the proper environment for credit unions to conduct business rather than the agency doing some of the work for them.
