MADISON, Wis. – The World Council of Credit Unions and IRnet were cited by Wall St. Journal reporter David Wessel in his weekly "Capitol" column that ran in the May 2 edition of The Wall Street Journal, as examples of organizations that are reaching out to serve the unbanked "on both sides of the border, with a low-cost money transfer network." In his article, "Banking on Technology for the Poor," Wessel pointed out "the potential of technology and globalization to aid those still on the economic fringe." He mentioned various institutions and organizations that are using technology to lower the cost of offering financial services, introducing much-needed competition in underserved communities, and attracting people in those communities to use lower-cost, convenient financial services. Wessel also cited Latino Community CU, Durham, N.C. and State Employees CU in Raleigh, in his column.
