<p>TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – While a record-breaking 5 billion credit card offers were mailed in 2001, consumers were relatively unimpressed as the response rate remained unchanged at .6%. According to Mail Monitor, a tracking service of market research firm BAI Global, Inc, direct mail solicitations generated 33 million new card applications up from 22 million in 2000 and last month 73% of U.S. households averaged about of 4.1 offers. Mailings included more offers for teaser rates on balance transfers, reward/co-brand offers and platinum cards, which jumped up from 64% in 2000 to 72% in 2001. In addition, in 2001 78% of the Platinum bankcard offers carried an introductory APR for balance transfers which were at a better rate an average of 1.57%, much lower than the 2000 average rate of 3.16%. Mail Monitor also reports that rebates, point incentives and other reward offers are regaining popularity.</p>
