Rhode Island Credit Union League, Warwick, and Empire Corporate Federal Credit Union have sponsored the annual Credit Union Classic High School Basketball Championships, for the twelfth consecutive year. State championship finals for both boys and girls basketball were held at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center during “March Madness.” Credit union sponsorship of this statewide tournament offers Rhode Island’s top high school athletes the opportunity of a lifetime to compete at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Over 25 of Rhode Island’s credit unions helped sponsor the event, which provided them ad space during the program, in addition to tickets to the play-off games, lobby posters, scoreboard displays and more. On the statewide level, marketing efforts also included Classic billboard ads, posters on Rhode Island’s public buses, several sixty-second radio spots, and full-page coverage in The Providence Journal. In addition, Empire Corporate FCU, sponsored the “Player of the Game” award and donated funds to the 12 high school finalists’ athletic funds to help support the schools’ athletic programs for future students. Municipal Employees’ Credit Union Of San Jose, Calif., has raised $3,263.05 to benefit the San Jose Police Activities League (PAL)and San Jose Firefighters Burn Foundation. There are currently over 10,000 children participating in PAL programs that help guide San Jose youth into responsible and mature citizenship. The Burn Foundation will use the funds towards a summer camp for burn victims. The camp provides young burn survivors an opportunity to meet with others who have gone through similar experiences. In addition, MECU and the Operations Support Division of the San Jose Police Department were able to raise $760 during a silent auction for C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors), which reaches out to survivors of police officers in the years following their tragic loss. MECU has raised more than $18, 000 for these organizations in the past five years. South Carolina Federal Credit Union, Charleston, has donated $17,503 to the local American Red Cross chapter. While $5,000 represents a corporate contribution, members and employees donated the remaining funds. As a token of appreciation, the credit union gave an American flag decal to each member who made a contribution. Sandia Laboratory Federal Credit Union, Alburquerque, N.M., have donated their time and construction skills to Habitat for Humanity. For three months, employees and CU members volunteered with hammers, saws and paintbrushes on the project. Once completed, the house was dedicated and handed over to Carlos and Cecilia Chavez and their children. The New Mexico Credit Union League is now exploring the feasibility of League-wide projects with the Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity.
