SAN ANTONIO, Texas-NCUA Chairman Dennis Dollar visited a housing development in San Antonio, Texas last week, which NCUA recognizes as demonstrating credit union-community partnership, to get a taste of the agency's Access Across America initiative at work. The program is focused on credit union partnerships with community programs and faith-based organizations. Dollar met with credit union and organization leaders, as well as residents and new homeowners resulting from this partnership initiative. He toured the Resurrection Heights subdivision, which he called a "solid example of a partnership that helps folks help themselves in attaining the American Dream of homeownership." The chairman was joined by President of the San Antonio Federal Credit Union Jeffrey H. Farver, Executive Director of San Antonio Alternative Housing Corporation Rod Radle, and Father Martin Elsner, pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, and Susana Benavidez, Caseworker/Service Academies Coordinator for Congressman Charles Gonzalez of San Antonio. In the seven-year partnership between San Antonio FCU and the Alternative Housing Corporation, a non-profit organization, the credit union has not had a foreclosure resulting from the program. The delinquency rate is also the lowest of any loan portfolio in the $1.4 billion credit union The Resurrection Heights subdivision has 15 completed houses plus many under construction, all financed by the credit union. San Antonio FCU provided both construction funding and loans for the low- to moderate-income homeowners. The credit union has committed another $5 million toward the project, with plans underway for two more subdivisions of over 100 homes each.
