<p>ATHENS, Texas – Austin Montgomery, former NCUA administrator and lobbyist for the Illinois Credit Union League, died March 6. Montgomery was sworn in as NCUA administrator at the White House in 1976, and he served in that capacity until 1978. As Administrator, he was responsible for the chartering, supervision, examination, and insurance of member accounts of over 12,000 federal credit unions. A native of Illinois, Montgomery worked in private insurance until February1969 when he accepted the position of Administrative Assistant to the Director, Department of Insurance, State of Illinois. Three months later, he was named Deputy Director for Administration, Department of Insurance. In February 1971, Montgomery was appointed Director of the Department of Financial Institutions for the State of Illinois, and in this capacity he supervised the more than 1,200 state-chartered credit unions in Illinois. He became Legislative Representative for the Illinois Credit Union League in February 1974, a position he held until his appointment as NCUA Administrator.</p>
