CLEARWATER, Fla. – Although it is still a little early, the first Winter Olympic Game winner has been announced. Card Services for Credit Unions and VISA have named Madison, Wisconsin-based University of Wisconsin Credit Union the winner of a trip for two to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. This really came as a surprise," said UWCU President/CEO Rod Staatz. "I know that my team worked extremely hard this year, but we really didn't realize that our numbers were good enough to win this trip-it's nice to be rewarded like this." Credit unions were evaluated for the period of January through November 2001, and the package was awarded to the $482 million credit union for demonstrating the strongest VISA growth in volume and accounts. The numbers that helped put UWCU over the top included a 59% card portfolio revenue increase; a 57% jump in outstandings; VISA volume increases of 37%; and a leap in usage of 17%. Valued at over $9,400, the five-day package includes hotel accommodations, round-trip airfare for two to Salt Lake City, Olympic event tickets, transportation to all events, meals, VISA hospitality, and a VISA Olympic gift. A random drawing that included all UWCU employees who were involved with credit card sales or support was held to pick one lucky winner. Announced as the final award of the credit union's first annual Sales Rally, Marketing Director Mary Nanneman ran around the room several times holding a mock Olympic torch before presenting the torch to winner Assistant Branch Manager Michelle Arnette. Arnette plans to enjoy the Olympic Games with her husband.
