<p>OLYMPIA, Wash. – This year's Washington Credit Union League Anchor Awards, which recognizes those who have shown support for credit unions, have been presented to a representative and a regulator. First-term Representative Dan Roach of the 31st District received the award for his significant impact on the credit union movement, including championing the League's 2001 Volunteer Protection Act, which was drafted to protect credit union board and committee members from potential liability. "Not only has he been a friend to credit unions but he's truly won the hearts of many in the legislature," said WCUL Governmental Affairs Consultant Mark Gjurasic. Upon accepting the award, Rep. Roach encouraged credit union members to not only play an active part in their communities but in state government as well. Roach said it was paramount for members to be involved whether through a softball league or Rotary club. Roach also stressed that members should contact their legislators before they need their help, "Even if it's just a phone call or letter It is important for members to break down any barriers and build relationships with legislators." In addition, the WCUL recognized Department of Financial Institutions Director of Credit Unions J. Parker Cann. Although giving an Anchor Award to a regulator is unusual, according to League Senior Vice President Stacy Augustine, "Cann has gone out of his way to work with the League in developing regulations that keep credit unions safe and sound, while allowing them to keep important decisions about governance and operations in their own board room."</p>
