CHAPIN, S.C.- PM Systems Corp. is offering a new managed security solution targeted to small to mid-sized credit unions that need robust Internet protection but can’t carry the tab for full-time internal protections. Called CU Defense, the program features a monitored, always-on intrusion detection system that is placed outside the credit union’s firewall or proxy server. If an attack is detected, PM Systems is automatically notified and its experts then can analyze the attack to see if defensive measures are needed. “This program is really geared to the small to mid-sized credit unions that can’t afford to run their own intrusion detection department,” says Robert Broadwell, PM Systems vice president and a former credit union auditor. “We maintain ownership of the equipment, keep it upgraded, and when the contract is over, we take it back. Most credit union CFOs will immediately see the benefits once they price out the alternatives,” he says. The system can be installed alone or with an optional Raptor firewall from Symantec. Other options include virtual private networks, content filtering and WebTrends logging software. The program includes monthly intrusion detection reports and analysis, and all data is provided to the client credit union to allow it to conform to standards set by NCUA in its ISTEP program. “Running an internal intrusion detection program at a credit union can run between $80,000 to $100,000, if you take into consideration the extra staff, equipment and training you have to budget for,” says Rick Woehler, security consultant at PM Systems. “Our goal is to provide credit unions the perimeter security they need while keeping their costs and staff involvement to a minimum,” he says.
