C & O United Credit Union, Edgewood, Ky., President/CEO Alla Holland has received the 2001 Frank Moore Outstanding Credit Union Professional Award by the Kentucky Credit Union League. Holland was recognized for her leadership and commitment to the credit union system for over 15 years on the local, state and national levels. In addition to her position as chief executive officer of the credit union, Holland serves as a volunteer officer of the Northern Kentucky Credit Union Chapter and as second vice chair of the board of directors of the Kentucky Credit Union League. She also served as one of only 27 persons on the Renaissance Commission, which was established by CUNA in 2000 to study the future of credit unions nationwide. Lackland Federal Credit Union, San Antonio, Texas, President/CEO Tom Whitmore has earned the prestigious Chartered Financial Analyst designation administered by the Association for Investment Management and Research. Candidates seeking the credential must pass three, six-hour examinations over at least three years covering investment ethics, securities analysis, financial accounting, quantitative analysis, economics and portfolio management and have a minimum of three years related professional experience. Candidates also must pledge to adhere to the stringent ethical standards set forth by AIMR and sign an annual statement attesting to their compliance. Some 9,410 candidates passed Level 3 this year and expect to earn their CFA charter, bringing the number of CFA charter holders worldwide to more than 44,000. Galesburg Midwest Credit Union, Ill. President/CEO Chris Ryner, has been awarded the Amethyst Award. The award is the highest available in the Management Enrichment Training Program, which helps credit union managers develop outstanding leadership skills. Ryner received the award for her completion of all 36 courses under the program. Teamwork, asset/liability management, financial analysis, lending, and training are some of the many topics covered. In addition, Ryner was also the first credit union individual to receive the MERIT Emerald Award last year for her completion of 24 courses under the program. The MERIT Program is offered through the Illinois Credit Union League and Credit Union National Association. Michigan Credit Union League, Northville Township, has announced the winners of the 2001 Louise Herring Award and Dora Maxwell Award for Philosophy in Action. Capital Area School Employees Credit Union took the first place Louise Herring award with Michigan State University Federal Credit Union taking second. The competition, sponsored by the MCUL and CUNA & Affiliates, honors credit unions for their practical applications of the "People Helping People" philosophy. The competition is named for Louise McCarren Herring, a credit union pioneer, who believed that the operational application of credit union philosophy helped better people's lives. Dubbed the "Mother of Credit Unions," she was involved in starting nearly 500 credit unions as well as being an outspoken advocate for women, minorities and the poor. This year's Dora Maxwell first place winner is Educational Community Credit Union, with University of Michigan Credit Union placing second. The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Program was established to encourage credit union and chapter involvement in community projects and activities. Dora Maxwell was a pioneer of the credit union movement and was elected to the first board of directors of the New York State Credit Union League in 1921. Ms. Maxwell was also employed as an organizer for the Credit Union National Extension Bureau, what is CUNA today. She held numerous volunteer positions within the movement and was active locally and nationally until 1955.
