TUKWILA, Wash. – Boeing Employees' Credit Union (BECU) has broadened its summer internship program to aid community causes in addition to teaching on-the-job financial service experience. "In addition to learning about the financial services industry, we have expanded the internship program to include community-service activities," said Dana McCarthy, employment manager at BECU. "The credit union is involved in a variety of community-oriented causes, such as the Children's Miracle Network, and we want the interns to also have exposure to the `people helping people' philosophy of credit unions." This summer, the 20 BECU interns organized a backpack and school supply drive to benefit the Highline and Tukwila school districts, collecting over 430 backpacks and a "truckload" of school supplies from credit union employees and members. McCarthy said the credit union plans to hire 35 interns next year and hopes to have year-round internship programs. BECU is the fourth largest credit union in the U.S. with 285,000 members and $3.5 billion in assets.
