KILLARNEY, Ireland – Over 100 Irish credit union leaders who were among the hundreds of delegates attending the World Council of Credit Unions 2001 International Conference and Annual General Meeting watched as one of their own, Gerry Foley, received the jewel of the office as Chairman of WOCCU from out-going Chairman Dennis Cutter, president of Numerica Credit Union, Spokane, Wash. The symbol, resembling a necklace of large, linking golden squares, was given to WOCCU by the Irish many years ago. Such necklaces are traditionally worn by officers of organizations and other elected officials in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Foley had been First Vice Chairman of WOCCU. His election to the WOCCU chairmanship caps a long credit union career that has included the presidency of the Irish League of Credit Unions, and a 14-year stint on their National Board including his current responsibilities on their Administration Committee. When he is not involved in credit union work, Foley serves as president of the Republic of Ireland Public Health Services. See related story on page 21 for further details about Foley and his involvement with credit unions.
