DES MOINES, Iowa – Jim Forney, superintendent of credit unions for the Iowa Credit Union Division will be recognized June 14 at an awards ceremony in the State Capitol rotunda as this year's recipient of the Leader of the Year award. The award is given through the governor's Golden Dome Awards Program that recognizes contributions and accomplishments of dedicated state employees. Forney has been superintendent of the Credit Union Division since February 1988 when he was appointed to that position by then-Gov. Terry Branstad. He was re-appointed to be superintendent by Gov. Thomas Vilsack in February 2001 and confirmed by the Iowa Senate in April. As the chief administrator of the Credit Union Division, Forney is responsible for the chartering, supervision and regulation of Iowa's 189 state-chartered CUs. Forney also serves as NASCUS chairman and serves as one of the five state regulatory officials who make up the State Liaison Committee of the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC). As a member of the committee, he regularly meets with the FFIEC Council composed of the Governor of the Federal Reserve, the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), the NCUA chairman, the chairman of the FDIC, and the Director of the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) to develop and prescribe examination principles and standards for all federal and state agencies to ensure uniformity in the supervision of financial institutions. Through Forney's leadership, the Iowa Credit Union Division is developing an innovative, off-site, risk-focused supervision process of the state's credit unions.
