Credit unions continue to band together in the wake of HurricaneSandy.

The National Credit Union Foundation said Friday that more than$65,000 has now been raised through CUAid to help credit unionpeople affected by Hurricane Sandy along the East Coast.

According to Christopher Morris, director of communications atNCUF, the foundation has been primarily working with the New Jersey Credit Union League on grant distribution.

The WorldCouncil of Credit Unions is also encouraging internationalcredit union organizations to support disaster relief effortsonline through CUAid.coop.

“Credit unions, their staff and employees in the Northeast havebeen significantly affected by this disaster. Many of these arecredit unions that have given to help rebuild other countries hitby disaster,” said Brian Branch, president/CEO of WOCCU.

“As a global community committed to building up and helping oneanother, we encourage our global community to help NCUF supportcredit unions trying get to their members back on their feet,”Branch said.

According to reports, Hurricane Sandy has killed at least 92people in the United States, and millions have been left withoutpower. Severe gas shortages have hampered cleanup efforts, floodinghas reached historic levels, and many mass-transit routes remainclosed in and around New York City.

“Everyone who supports CUAid is helping affected credit unionpeople directly with critical needs, longer-term recovery needs,operational needs and assisting credit union members,” said BuckySebastian, executive director, NCUF.

The foundation said it will coordinate with credit union leaguesin the disaster area to efficiently distribute money to affectedcredit union employees and members.
