West Virginia Credit Union League President Kenneth Watts said credit unions in that state dodged the bullet even though parts of West Virginia have been smothered with one to three feet of snow generated by what's now been dubbed Superstorm Sandy.

The blizzard conditions were not expected to subside until Wednesday afternoon.

“For the most part things are doing pretty well for credit unions in West Virgina,” Watts said. “We've talked to credit unions throughout the state and things have been operating at a slight delay in some cases but there were no closings we are aware of.”

Although there were more than 236,000 customers without power early Tuesday, according to media reports, credit unions in the state were apparently not affected.

“I've been pleasantly surprised that most of our credit unions have been open,” said Watts. One credit union housed in a school had been closed Tuesday because schools across the state were shuttered due to the blizzard.
