Maryland Couple’s Startup Receives CU’s ‘Loving Care’

Afshin and Leila Abedi said they are grateful to the National Institutes of Health FCU for helping them open their new business, the Loving Care Adult Medical Daycare. Afshin and Leila Abedi said they are grateful to the National Institutes of Health FCU for helping them open their new business, the Loving Care Adult Medical Daycare.

Thanks to financing from the National Institutes of Health Federal Credit Union, an adult medical daycare facility will open for business this spring.

Because of NIHFCU’s business loan program Afshin and Leila Abedi of Gaithersburg, Md., plan to launch the Loving Care Adult Medical Daycare. The center will provide medical, social, recreational, educational and rehabilitative services to disabled adults and seniors in Montgomery County.

In April 2011, Leila Abedi, who was a nurse practitioner at the National Institutes of Health, opened a direct deposit account at an NIHFCU branch where she noticed information about business loans, according to the $535 million CU in Rockville, Md.

Four months after opening the account, the couple decided to inquire about NIHFCU's business loan program. The branch set up a meeting with NIHFCU’s member business loan department. From there, the Abedis were able to secure a business loan.

“It was the fastest experience I have ever had with any financial institution, Afshin Abedi said. “Within 24 hours they told us that they could do our loan.”

The Abedis said they considered several financial institutions for financing but liked how the NIHFCU team made them feel like their new business could succeed.

“I felt others were waiting for us to fail so that they could take everything I have. I never felt that way with the [credit union],” Afshin Abedi said.

Juli Anne Callis, president/CEO of NIHFCU, said it was an honor to help the couple realize their dream of becoming entrepreneurs.

“We are proud to offer a wide array of customized solutions to help healthcare professionals like the Abedi family build healthy businesses so they in turn can provide high quality healthcare services to our community,” Callis said.

Leila said she hopes the new daycare center will serve a need in the community.

“We are passionate about serving the elderly and the underserved. NIHFCU helped make our dreams come true and words cannot describe – especially in today’s economy – how wonderful our experience was. It was thorough, professional and fast.”
