Texas Governor Makes 'Smart Financial' Choice for Commission Spot

Gary Tuma, president/CEO of the $450 million Smart Financial Credit Union in Houston, is the newest member of the Texas Credit Union Commission

He has been appointed to a six-year-term by Gov. Rick Perry, the credit union announced Wednesday.

Tuma, past chair of the CU-owned Town North National Bank of Dallas, fills a seat formerly held by Barbara Sheffield, former president/CEO of Members Choice CU of Houston.

Tuma, who has been president/CEO of Smart since 1990 and a past director of the Texas Credit Union League, was named to a term expiring Feb. 15, 2017.

The nine-member Texas CU Commission, composed of both CU executives and private industry leaders, is slated to hold its next meeting June 17.

Perry also designated Thomas Butler, a Deer Park investor and commission member since 2005, as the new chairman.
