The nation’s largest payments CUSO is expanding its network of ATMs by nearly 10%, with the largest growth in the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast.

Rob Goodwin, Velera’s vice president of network growth, said about 3,000 ATMs will be added to its surcharge-free network, increasing its ATM count to 37,000 nationwide. The largest concentration of new locations will be added in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, New York, North Carolina, Minnesota and Texas.

“These additional locations significantly increase convenience for members who rely on surcharge-free access as part of their everyday banking experience,” Goodwin said.

The locations will start joining the network this month at select Speedway locations, which operates in 36 states, predominately in the Midwest and East Coast.

7-Eleven Inc. bought 3,800 Speedway Stores in 2021 from Marathon Petroleum Corp., increasing 7-Eleven’s total number of stores to more than 13,000 in the U.S. and Canada. 7‑Eleven Inc. is wholly owned by Seven & i Holdings Co. Ltd. of Tokyo.

The ATM provider for the expansion is FCTI Inc., which handles ATMs for 7-Eleven Inc. chains, which include 7-Eleven, Speedway and Stripes stores. FCTI has supported Velera’s Co-op ATM Network for more than two decades.

PSCU, a payments CUSO based of St. Petersburg, Fla., acquired the ATM network through its January 2024 acquisition of Co-op Solutions, the payments CUSO based in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. It changed its name to Velera four months after the merger.

A Velera news release said cash remains essential to members even as digital payments continue to grow. Velera’s 2025 Eye on Payments report found that one in four credit union members uses an ATM weekly, primarily to withdraw cash (70%), followed by depositing cash (35%) and depositing checks (29%).

“Our Co-op ATM Network – the largest issuer-owned surcharge-free network – is built on the credit union principle of ‘people helping people,’” Goodwin said. “As we continue to grow our footprint, we’re helping credit unions strengthen engagement and impact in their communities, while providing members with convenient access to cash when and where they need it.”

Velera said the network’s expansion helps credit unions streamline operations, boost member retention and drive revenue growth. Velera also has locator apps and customizable marketing tools designed to highlight ATM locations.
