The White House unveiled its “America’s AI Action Plan” this week, outlining an ambitious national strategy to advance artificial intelligence development, infrastructure and global leadership. The 25-page document, released under Executive Order 14179, called for sweeping deregulation, rapid adoption of AI across sectors, and the export of U.S. AI systems and standards.

The credit union industry responded positively, with America’s Credit Unions highlighting the plan’s alignment with credit unions’ own technology goals.

“The White House’s AI Action Plan is a timely and strategic step toward ensuring America’s leadership in emerging technology — and credit unions are ready to be part of that future,” Jim Nussle, president/CEO of America’s Credit Unions, said. “AI is already helping credit unions improve member service through cybersecurity and fraud detection, operational efficiencies and modern data management to better serve 144 million Americans.”

The federal strategy included provisions to promote open-source AI models, streamline permitting for data center construction, and reduce regulatory friction at both federal and state levels. It also encouraged AI deployment in areas like lending, fraud detection and operational automation, tools already being explored by many credit unions.

“A national framework that supports innovation, reduces regulatory friction and promotes responsible AI adoption will empower credit unions to deliver greater financial inclusion and security for working families, small businesses and the everyday Americans who count on Main Street to thrive,” Nussle said. “We look forward to continued engagement with the administration and federal regulators like the NCUA to help credit unions harness AI’s full potential.”

The Action Plan outlines 80 recommended policy actions across innovation, infrastructure and international diplomacy. It also calls for expanding AI education and workforce retraining programs, creating evaluation standards, and using AI to improve government efficiency and national security.

President Trump’s plan framed AI development as a national security imperative, asserting, “We must harness the full power of American innovation.”
