ARLINGTON, VA — Consumers are sending mixed signals about their intentions to use gift cards this coming holiday season, indicating that they are still interested in using the popular gift option but maybe not to the same degree as in previous years.

Gift cards have been rapidly part of the overall card industry for several years.

The most recent and most positive indication of consumer intent came from a survey published by CardTrak.com, a Web site that tracks card trends.

The site reported that a holiday gift card poll suggested that while 33% of Americans participating in the survey said they would not buy any gift cards at all, 24% indicated they would purchase three or four cards for a total of roughly $100 to $200. A full 15% said they would buy more than seven cards and for a total of roughly $600.

But this is among the surveys with the best outlook. Others have suggested the numbers of consumers willing to purchase gift cards down between 3% and 11%.
