The NCUA late Thursday warned consumers about a telephonescam in which scammers claim to work for the NCUA and ask for personal and financialinformation.

According to a release, callers told consumers her or his creditcard or debit card had been frozen or blocked. Callers then askedfor the consumer's Social Security number, account number, date ofbirth and home address to verify the information.

The agency warned consumers should not provide this or any otherinformation to the caller, because the NCUA would not requestpersonal or financial information in this manner.

Consumers who suspect they may have become victims of identitytheft should immediately contact their credit union and, ifnecessary, close existing accounts and open new ones. The NCUA alsourged consumers to contact the three major credit bureaus – Equifax(866-349-5191), Experian (888-397-3742) and TransUnion(800-916-8800) – to request a fraud alert be placed on their creditreports.
