Despite the seasonal good cheer one encounters at the workplace, lurking beneath thesurface, there are holiday haters.

And guess what their top five most hated workplace practicesare? You don't need to guess — with the help of Dr. Paul White,we'll tell you.

White is a psychologist who specializes in sorting out sourcedworkplace relationships. The creator of the Toxic WorkplacePrevention and Repair Kit, he decided to find out what bugged folksthe most at work during the holidays. holiday workplace stressNo. 1: Workplacegifting. A total of 70% of respondents said what theyhated most about the holidays is pressure to buy gifts forothers at work. This was combined category with three majorcomponents. First, white elephant gift exchanges (23%) in whichemployees have to bring a gift that goes into a grab bag, so theydon't even know who they're giving it to. Second, the expectationthat one must buy a gift for a boss or peer clocked in at 22%. Andfinally, the time-honored Secret Santa exchange, in which names ofrecipients are secretly assigned, ranked third at 21%.

work stress during the holidaysNo. 2:Pressure to get year-end tasks done. Nearly 30% saidthey hate this. And why wouldn't they? They have all year to getsomething done, and the boss drops it in their lap right before theholiday party and strongly hints that their annual bonus willhinge on the project's successful completion.

workplace holidayNo. 3: Having toattend after hours holiday celebrations. One in fivecited this as a most hated holiday practice; not because they don'tlike to party, but because they want to party on the company'sdime and time, not their own.

“Holidays are supposed to be a happy time, but when bossescombine forced fun with expectations that impact employee'sfinances and eat into their personal time, it's a toxic combinationthat often results in negative attitudes, the opposite of what wasintended,” White said.

While most companies pay extra orgrant extra personal time to those who must labor while othersrelax, nearly one in five of those surveyed said they still hatedthe practice. One respondent indignantly reported having towork 17 hours on Christmas day to meet year-end requirements.

Thisone was sort of a culmination of other hateful holiday traditions.It's bad enough that the workload actually increases at year-endbecause of year-long inefficiencies. People are struggling to geteverything done, and then, not only must they attend a holidayluncheon, they have to bring a covered dish too.
