The NCUA has warned consumers about a scam that involves textmessages from an NCUA telephone line requesting personalinformation.

The latest warning comes after the agency sounded the alarm on afraudulent website.

The NCUA said it is not sending any text messages to consumersand is not asking for any personal or financial information fromconsumers. The agency explained that the attempted fraud scam iscalled spoofing.Consumers are advised to not click on links in the message orprovide information to any websites referenced in the message.

“The perpetrators are able to mimic a telephone number togenerate text messages,” an NCUA press release said. “The texts maywarn of a debit card reaching its limit or use some other trick topersuade individuals to provide personal information or go to amalicious website.”

The NCUA announced that more than 40 consumers around thecountry received text messages on Tuesday. Consumers who receivethe text message are encouraged to contact the NCUA's consumerassistance center at 800-755-1030.
