resumeMillennials have foundthat their values and those of the big corporations for which theywork are not well aligned.

That's one conclusion that seemed clear from Aon Hewitt dataderived from input from more than 2,500 workers at largecompanies.

Aon Hewitt sorted responses from the survey by age bracket andreported that millennials' expectations were especially out of syncwith their experiences working for a major employer (1,000 or moreemployees).

The upshot: 43% of the millennials in the surveywere looking for a new and better place to work thisyear.

“Millennials feel that what they value in an organization isdifferent than the priorities of their current workplace,” AonHewitt said. “Most employees believe their employers' currentvalues focus on more organizational-oriented themes, includingteamwork, profit and customer satisfaction.

“When asked what qualities are the most desirable in anorganization, millennials cited more relationship-oriented values, including work/home balance, employee recognition, loyalty andrespect. Other values with large perception gaps between currentand desired include open communication, professional growth, fairness, humor/fun, clarity, and well-being(physical/emotional/mental/spiritual).”

The survey results showed considerable gaps between millennials'experiences in their current jobs in all those areas and what theyhad expected to find when they took the job.

They also had plenty to say about other more concrete workingconditions. Here's how they ranked areas where they would like tosee improvement:

  • Pay and benefits (51%)

  • Good career or development opportunities (39%)

  • Performance recognition (38%)

  • Open/complete communication (34%)

  • Flexible work environment (33%)

  • Fun (30%)

  • Having a strong management and leadership team (30%)

“Our research shows there is a clear disconnect between whatmillennials expect and desire from employers, and what theiremployers are actually offering,” said Ray Baumruk, employeeresearch leader, Aon Hewitt. “This gap is negatively impacting theengagement and retention of this generation, and may be one of theprimary reasons why millennials will be looking for newopportunities in 2015.”
