On Oct. 6, CUNA announced its involvement in three competitivecongressional races.

According to CUNA Vice President of Political Affairs TreyHawkins, the trade group is conducting partisan communications inthe form of direct mails sent to credit union members thatencourages them to vote for specific candidates.

CUNA is spending approximately $265,000 on a series of eightmailers for Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) in the Iowa Senate race. Themailers are being sent to more than 67,000 credit unionhouseholds.

The trade organization is also sending out four mailers for Rep.Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) to 16,000 credit union voters for in hisre-election campaign, costing roughly $117,000.

In addition, CUNA is also spending $96,000 on seven mailers to25,000 credit union voters in support of Rep. Cheri Bustos(D-Ill.).

“All three have been solid credit union champions, and we'reexcited to work with the Iowa and Illinois leagues on these mailprograms to advise credit union members of that fact,” Hawkins toldCU Times.

The partisan communications initiatives are being fundeddirectly by CUNA separate from CULAC, the group's political action committee.
