The $60 million Palmetto Health Credit Union said it hastemporarily blocked debit card transactions in Florida as well as at gasstations in Michigan, North Carolina and Ohio.

The Columbia, S.C.-based credit union took the step after havingtaken thousands of dollars in losses in just a couple of days, according to Palmetto Health CU President/CEO Hansel Hart.

|

“Our debit manager and I had a talk about it earlier today andwe just decided a temporary block was what we needed to do,” Hartsaid.

|

The move will only block debit transactions authorized with asignature. Debit transactions that use a PIN will still work, Hartexplained.

If Palmetto Health members expect to travel into Florida andknew they would need to sign for debit card transactions, theycould call the credit union to have their card exempted from theblock, he added.
