More than 7,000 people turned out for a shred fest held by SanDiego County Credit Union. The event disposed of 422,350 pounds ofpaper and set a Guinness World Record along the way.

The $6.5 billion credit union invited the community to its SDCCUSuper Shred Event July 26 at the Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

Early that morning, hundreds of SDCCU members, families, friendsand members of the public lined up with boxes full of old documentscontaining personal and confidential information to be shred at nocharge, the credit union said.

In July 2013, SDCCU organized the effort to collect and shred168,147 pounds of paper, setting its first Guinness World Recordfor the most paper collected in 24 hours at a single location,according to the credit union.

That record was beat by an organization in Texas in April 2014with 401,925 pounds of paper collected.

However, SDCCU set a new record July 26.

“SDCCU is committed to helping our customers and the communityprotect their confidential data and privacy,” TeresaHalleck, SDCCU president/ CEO said. “We are dedicated topreventing identity theft as well as our efforts to go green withour online banking services.”

The first 1,000 people who took advantage of SDCCU's freeshredding services received a free gift. Throughout the day,participants enjoyed free food provided by Mike's BBQ and madedonations to the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, raising nearly$8,500.

Shred-It, a document destruction and recycling company, providedthe shredding services.

LinkServ E-Waste was onsite to collect and recycle electronicwaste. Its “We Pay 10″ program yielded $2,000 in donations for theSan Diego Humane Society and SPCA, which contributed to the totalraised during the one-day event.

SDCCU said it began hosting its free Shred Day events in 2007and has since collected, shredded and recycled more than 1.1million pounds of documents at no charge, saving more than 9,700trees. The credit union said every 120 pounds shredded representsone saved tree.

“SDCCU would like to thank the entire community forbanding together to help take back our world record and be a partof history. The response from the community was unbelievable – weare grateful for the overwhelming show of support,” Hallecksaid.

She added, “More importantly, we are happy that more than 7,000people took advantage of the free shredding services and no longerhave sensitive information sitting around their homes andoffices.”
