gen x Millennials

With all the statistics, surveys andreports about Gen X and Millennials' likes and dislikes,CU Times decided to ask a few people from eachgeneration what they look for in a bank and what they expect frompotential employers.

|

Both generations said credit unions provided convenient accessto cash when travelling or moving to another area. As far asexpectation of potential employers, both generations saidflexibility, interesting work and a family first culture topped thelist.

|

Convenient weekend hours and competitive auto loan rates at the$2.3 billion Coastal Federal Credit Union are what appealed to a42-year-old e-commerce/IT exec, who preferred to remainannoymous.

|

“It doesn't matter to me whether a credit union or a bank. Inthis case they offered the best vehicle loan rate, they could beatanything by 1% at least,” she said.

|

She has been with her company for 13 years.

|

“I've never been bored,” she said. “That they can continue toteach me and the culture is one in which work is not more importantthan family is everything. There are other organizations that mayoffer more money but it's the people and exposure to knowledge thatkeeps me there.”

For me I draw a line in the sand of what I consider a bank andan investment company. In my opinion a bank wouldn't be as good atinvestments as a traditional investment firm. That being said, witha bank (and I include credit unions in that category) it just comesdown to the interest rate. So the only thing I really care aboutwith a bank is being able to know where I spent my money. I knowevery dollar our family has spent for the last 20 years. A bank orcredit union can do that, so to me the only real differentiation isthat interest rate.

Good, competitive loan rates, convenient ATM locations, awebsite that's user friendly and easy to navigate and strongwebsite security. I don't care as much about mobile access becauseI just prefer to do my banking on my home computer. I don't evenlike to check my account at work because of security concerns.

My parents were members of Georgia's Own and started an accountfor me so I didn't really have a choice in the matter of where I'dbank. Today I do have accounts at national banks but my creditunion is the primary one because the people are great and I haveconvenient easy access to all my account information with theiriPhone app. As long as I can access my money when and where Iwant.

Competitive rates, convenient access to my money since I'm onthe road a lot and I've had fun using mobile banking and being ableto make a deposit with my phone. What really matters istrusting the people there and being comfortable enough to askquestions without being made to feel stupid. Because of theexperiences my family and I have had with big banks I've learnedthey are unforgiving, you have to keep a watchful eye on everythingright away or you get into trouble. So I need to feel like where Ibank the people there are looking out for me. I need to feel zerostress.

work life balanceCulture, positive, like-minded young professionals who are making asignificant impact on something, whether it's on the community or aproduct/service the organization has to be doing somethingsignificant. I'm looking for growth potential, competitive salaryand job stability. To me that's found in large companies. I feel ata large company even if my position were eliminated there would beother departments I could move to. I think it's also to be ina company that will allow me to advance my skills. I don't want togo in feeling like I did this 10 years ago, so it has to besomeplace, for lack of a better word, that's cutting edge thatallows me to continue to learn.

I want a work/life balance and competitive salary. I work fromhome three days a week and that gives me unbelievable flexibilityin my life, that I will now be looking for as a standard goingforward. There may be a scenario where pay could possibly overridethat work/life balance but truly I haven't given that muchthought.

I'd say the quality of life at work. I love my job and lovegoing to work every day but it's very important that any employeris understanding that family comes first. Yes a fair salary, benefits matter as well, like health insurance, vacation time andthe flexibility with my schedule so I can take time to go to mydaughter's recital or if the kids are sick, work from home. Thatfamily time outweighs salary. I work in a university setting and asa graphic designer I could easily make double my salary elsewherebut I love the environment here, the creative freedom and the workitself. Why trade that to make a lot of money but be miserable, stressed out and miss moments with my family?

I have to love what I'm doing, so the work matters and having adecent boss. I don't want to go in everyday hating what I do. I just had a bad experience with an employer that didn't end wellso I've learned how important it is to have good people in acompany, especially as managers. Pay of course matters too, butbenefits I don't worry about as much since I get that from myhusband.
