Democratic members of theFinancial Services Committee Subcommittee on Oversight andInvestigations have called on inspectors general at the FederalReserve to investigate CFPB personnel policies for possiblediscrimination. And, they've asked the NCUA's inspector general toreview NCUA policies, too.

In a letter sent to the Federal Reserve Inspector General MarkBialek, lawmakers including Financial Services Committee RankingMember Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), who is pictured at left, expressedconcern over allegations that CFPB managers have been ranking white employees “distinctlybetter” than minority employees on performance reports.

“We request that the Office of Inspector General immediatelyexercise its independent oversight authority over the bureau'soperations, to detect whether any personnel practices and policieshave created an unfair or discriminatory workplace for minoritiesand women employed at the CFPB,” said the letter dated March24.

The Democrats sent additional letters to inspectors general atthe FDIC, NCUA, Department of Treasury, Federal Housing FinanceAgency, and the SEC.

The lawmakers are requesting a review of internal operations to“determine whether any personnel practices have created adiscriminatory workplace or otherwise systematically disadvantagedminorities from obtaining senior managementpositions.

Waters and Subcommittee Ranking Member Al Green (D-Texas) signedthe letters, as did Democrats Carolyn Maloney (N.Y.), EmanuelCleaver (Mo.) and Denny Heck (Wash.).

It's not just Democrats questioning the CFPB. Financial ServicesCommittee Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), Oversight andInvestigations Subcommittee Chairman Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) andFinancial Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee ChairmanShelley Moore Capito (R-W.V.) wrote CFPB Director Richard Cordrayon March 6 and requested the bureau's employee performance reviewrecords.

The Financial Services Committee Oversight and InvestigationsSubcommittee will hold a hearing next week focused on possiblediscrimination and retaliation against CFPB employees.
