Drivers who recently pulled into a local gas station weresurprised to find out that their fuel was paid for by MerrimackValley Credit Union.

The $496 million cooperative in North Andover, Mass., said itgave away more than $6,000 in free gas to 144 drivers Jan. 31 atHaffner's Gas Station.

Staff from the credit union, including President/CEO PeterMatthews, pumped gas for nearly two hours during the morningcommute, according to Merrimack Valley.

The giveaway ended around 8:30 a.m. when local traffic wasaffected by lines at the gas station, the credit union said.

“We were so pleased at the overwhelming response. We made a lotof people happy today and in doing so supported a local businessand created some awareness of our credit union,” Matthews said. “Wecan't wait to do this again.”
