Michael's, an arts and crafts supply retailer with more than1,100 stores, is the most recent retailer to be targeted bycard data thieves.

In a Jan. 25 letter posted on its website, Michael's CEO ChuckRubin alerted consumers.

“We recently learned of possible fraudulent activity on someU.S. payment cards that had been used at Michaels, suggesting wemay have experienced a data security attack,” Rubin said in theletter. “We are working closely with federal law enforcement andare conducting an investigation with the help of third-party datasecurity experts to establish the facts.”

Media outlets had reported that financial institutions had begunto trace card fraud cases to cards used at the store and the U.S.Secret Service had confirmed that it is investigating a possiblebreach.

If confirmed, the Irving, Texas-based Michael's would be thethird of the most recent string of breached retail firms, behindTarget andNeimanMarcus.
