Credit union industry leaders and volunteers will behonored during the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues' annual meeting andconvention this week in San Francisco.

Patsy Van Ouwerkerk, president/CEO of the $2.1 billion,174,457-member Travis Credit Union in Vacaville, Calif., will receive the LeoH. Shapiro Lifetime Achievement Award, the CCUL's highest honorrecognizing excellence in credit union philosophy and a lifetime ofcontributions to the California credit union movement.

The award is named after Leo H. Shapiro, founder of the leagueand considered a father of the California credit unionmovement.

Van Ouwerkerk's 38-year credit union involvement includesserving on the boards of the California League and Western CUNAManagement School, as well as being a founder of the World Councilof Credit Unions' Global Women's Leadership Network and chairingfundraising activities for Children's Miracle Network, according toa prepared statement from the California and Nevada Credit UnionLeagues.

She also has served on the boards of CO-OP Financial Services,the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation, and the Filene ResearchInstitute. Her service on the CCUL board of directors has includeda year as its chair.

Teresa Freeborn, president/CEO of the $800 million,65,507-member Xceed Financial Federal Credit Union in El Segundo, Calif.,will receive the Distinguished Service Award, which recognizesindividuals for service to the credit union community outside theusual scope of employment at their credit union and beyond thescope of their chapter.

Roxanne Ostrem, board chair of the $652 million, 61,591-memberVentura County Credit Union in Ventura, Calif., will receivethe Outstanding Volunteer Award, which honors significantcontributions by an individual who serves credit unions involunteer capacities, such as a director or committee member.

Annice Kim, president/CEO of the $14.2 million, 2,747-memberL.A. Healthcare Federal Credit Union in Los Angeles will receivethe Tomorrow's Star Award, which recognizes the achievements ofyoung credit union professionals age 35 and under.

Randy Thompson will receive the individual category of theKim Bannan Eternal Flame Award, which recognizes efforts thatcontribute to the success and future of Shapiro Group creditunions. The award is named after the CCUL's late vice president ofcredit union development and research and information.

Thompson developed the CostPro Suite, a tool that helps creditunions analytically and effectively price their loans, which hasled several small credit unions to increase their operationalefficiencies, such as the $38 million, 4,251-member WesternHealthcare Federal Credit Union in Concord, Calif., according tothe California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues.

The Kim Bannan Eternal Flame Award recipient in the companycategory is the Plano, Texas-based Catalyst Corporate FederalCredit Union, which is being honored for itssupport, including the donation of $10,000 to the Shapiro group tosponsor educational opportunities for small credit unions.Additionally, Catalyst provides a multitude of no-cost of educationand training opportunities for small credit unions.
