This week's NASCUS State System Summit, which wraps up Friday inCoeur D'Alene, Idaho, has stirred up a lot of activity, discussionand recognition for industry leaders.

To help kick off the Summit, a former state regulator, creditunion executive and longtime NASCUS leader was honored for hisoutstanding service, leadership and commitment to NASCUS and thedual chartering system.

Parker Cann, general counsel for the $11.5 billion BECU in Seattle andpast executive council chairman of NASCUS, received the 2013 NASCUSPierre Jay Award as the conference got underway.

|

Created in 1997, the award is named after the first commissionerof banks in Massachusetts. Cann is the first Pierre Jay winner whohas been both a state regulator and a credit union executive,NASCUS said.

“When we created the Pierre Jay Award, it was meant for honoreeslike Parker who have made countless contributions to NASCUS and tothe state credit union system,” said NASCUS President/CEO MaryMartha Fortney.

“Parker continues to set such a high standard for excellence andwas truly passionate about states' rights and the important work topreserve the safety and soundness of the state credit unionsystem,” Fortney continued.

“We are grateful that we can recognize him for his dedication tocredit union innovation, regulatory professionalism and hiscommitment to making the state system better and strongerthroughout his career,” she said.

Dozens of other credit union leaders, state and federalregulators and dual chartering supporters converged for the annualSummit, the trade group said.

The general session closed with a panel titled “Working Togetheron System Priorities: The Credit Union Leadership Forum,” whichincluded Fortney along with NAFCU President/CEO Dan Berger and CUNAPresident/CEO Bill Cheney, and was moderated by Defense CreditUnion Council President/CEO Arty Arteaga.

Panelists discussed their organization's priorities, includingmaintaining credit union tax exemption and keeping the statecharter strong.

Friday's schedule includes a session on director compensation,one on cyber crimes and another on emerging IT trends.
