An armed robber was shot and killed by an off-duty policeofficer who was in a Virginia Beach, Va., branch of ChartwayFederal Credit Union conducting personal business Saturday morning,police said.

At 10:10 a.m. Saturday, a man wearing a mask, gloves and darkclothes walked in the Chartway FCU branch at5004 Ferrell Parkway, brandishing what appeared to be gun, saidSgt. Adam Bernstein of the Virginia Beach PoliceDepartment.

The suspect announced his intention to rob the credit union,said Bernstein.

“There was an off-duty law enforcement officer in the bank as acustomer conducting business,” Bernstein said. “He confronted thebank robber and (as) the bank robber turned towards him the officershot him at least once. He struck the suspect and the suspect waspronounced dead at the scene.”

There were six employees in the credit union branch as well as two other members besides theofficer, a spokeswoman for the $1.9 billion Virginia Beach-basedcredit union said Monday. No one else was injured, police said.

Because the suspect was not carrying identification, police wereworking Monday to confirm his identity and notify his next ofkin.

Police also declined to identify the off-duty police officer butconfirmed he was from the Portsmouth, Va., Police Department.
