Unabated rainfall in northern Colorado has led to massive flash floods that have killed atleast three people, damaged dozens of homes and cars, and closedhundreds of roads, schools and businesses, including approximately20 credit union branches and offices in Boulder and surroundingareas including Longmont, Lyons, Jamestown and Nederland.

The floods forced at least four Boulder-based credit unions –Elevations CU, Premier Member FCU, Boulder Valley CU and BoulderMunicipal Employees FCU – to close branches, phone centers andother back office operations Thursday.

Because officials at the Boulder Office of Emergency urged allresidents to “stay home if at all possible,” credit union branchesmay be forced to remain closed on Friday. However, two creditunions are expected to re-open some branches Friday, according tosocial media site postings.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency forBoulder County and northwest Jefferson County, and warningscontinued for many surrounding areas.

What's more, the city of Longmont, 15 miles northeast ofBoulder, has been “cut in half” by surging flood water from the St.Vrain River, the Boulder Office of Emergency Management said earlyFriday morning.

Hundreds of residents in several neighborhoods were asked toevacuate their homes and National Guard troops were called in tohelp with the evacuations. All roads in the town of Lyons have beenunderwater for two days trapping residents there sinceWednesday.

The $1.3 billion Elevations Credit Union in Boulder closed its 10 branches inBoulder, Westminster, Lafayette, Longmont and Loveland. The creditunion also closed its phone center.

“Elevation branches, phone contact center and back office arecurrently closed but we are looking at a possible limited openingtomorrow (Friday) at 10 a.m. best case and weather permitting,”according to a update posted on the credit union's Facebook page atabout midnight Mountain Time. The cooperative said its online andmobile banking and ATMs are working.

Also based in Boulder, the $445 million Premier Member FederalCredit Union, closed its branches in Boulder, Firestone, Longmont,and Westminster Thursday at 1 p.m., according to its website.

Another Boulder-based credit union, the $300 million BoulderValley, closed all of its five branches on Thursday, but said itsbranches in Arapahoe and Louisville would re-open Friday at 10 a.m.(MDT), according to a post on its Facebook site.

The credit union said its branch in Estes Park will remainclosed, but has not determined whether it will open two otherbranches.

The $62 million Boulder Municipal Employees Federal Credit Unionalso closed its sole branch Thursday.
